The core of the system is the Arduino Nano or Uno, which acts as the brain, processing inputs from various sensors to trigger specific outputs. The design focuses on a lightweight yet sturdy frame to house the electronics, powered by a 7.4V power source (two 3.7V batteries in series). For obstacle detection, the IR sensor monitors the immediate path; when an object reflects the infrared light, the Arduino triggers the buzzer and displays a “Warning” message on the LCD. To tackle the common issue of wet floors, a water sensor is placed at the tip of the stick; when it touches water, the resistance changes, sending a signal to the Arduino to emit a distinct rhythmic beep. For proactive safety, an LDR (Light Dependent Resistor) continuously monitors ambient light; if it falls below a set threshold, the system automatically activates high-intensity LEDs to illuminate the path and make the user visible. A manual horn switch is also integrated, allowing the user to alert others in crowded areas purposefully. The LCD provides real-time status updates, which is helpful for maintenance or for a sighted assistant to calibrate the device. The synergy between these components ensures a multi-layered safety net, moving from passive detection to active environmental interaction.
Apparatus Required
• Arduino Uno or Nano: The primary microcontroller for logic processing.
• IR Obstacle Sensor: To detect physical barriers in the user’s path.
• Water Sensor: For detecting puddles or wet surfaces at ground level.
• LDR (Light Dependent Resistor): To sense ambient light levels for the auto-LED feature.
• 16×2 LCD Display: To provide visual status updates and debugging info.
• Piezo Buzzer: To provide audible alerts for obstacles and water.
• High-Intensity LEDs: For automatic nighttime visibility.
• Push Button Switch: To operate the manual horn/alert system.
• 2x 3.7V Li-ion Batteries: Connected in series to provide a stable 7.4V supply.
• Jumper Wires & PVC Pipe: For internal connections and the physical stick structure.
