The Smart Restaurant Occupancy and Assistance System is an automated, micro-controller-based solution designed to streamline crowd management and enhance customer service in modern dining environments. By utilizing bidirectional infrared (IR) sensors at the entryway, the system intelligently tracks the live inflow and outflow of patrons, eliminating the need for manual tracking and preventing overcrowding. A centralized microcontroller processes this real-time data to dynamically manage the restaurant’s ambient lighting, ensuring that energy is only consumed when the space is actively occupied. Furthermore, the system integrates a smart customer assistance feature that allows patrons at individual tables to request immediate staff attention via a localized switch interface. To prevent accidental triggers or false alarms when the dining area is empty, this help mechanism is programmatically locked and will only activate when the live customer count is greater than zero. When a valid assistance request is made, an integrated audiovisual alert system instantly engages, triggering a blinking LED indicator and a buzzer while displaying the precise table number on a liquid crystal display (LCD). Ultimately, this project serves as a foundational prototype for smart buildings, blending resource conservation, automated operations, and responsive hospitality into a cohesive, cost-effective embedded system.
Apparatus Required
Arduino Uno Microcontroller: Serves as the primary computational brain to process sensor data, manage conditional logic, and control output modules.
16×2 Character LCD Module: Provides a clear, real-time visual interface for displaying the ongoing customer count and localized emergency help alerts.
Infrared (IR) Obstacle Sensor Modules (2 Units): Used as the entry and exit gates to detect bidirectional movement via interrupted infrared light beams.
Push-Button Switch (Active-Low): Placed at the dining table to act as the interface for customers to request immediate service from staff.
5V Piezo Buzzer & 5mm LED Indicator: Work in tandem as the audiovisual alerting system to emit pulsing beeps and bright flashes during a help request.
Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks: Essential for structural assembly, ensuring robust, fast-drying adhesion of components, wires, and scenery to the base.
Plywood Base (Main Chassis): Provides a rigid, durable, and flat structural foundation to neatly layout and mount the entire interactive project village.
Miniature Cardboard Houses: Used to represent the simulated restaurant building and surrounding architectural layout, providing realistic context to the automation electronics.
Artificial Trees and Grasses: Decorative landscaping materials utilized to enhance aesthetic appeal, creating a professional, realistic scale model environment for demonstration.
Connecting Wires (Solid & Stranded Jumper Wires): Establish secure, low-resistance electrical pathways between the sensors, microcontroller, breadboard, switches, and various output notification modules.
