Abstarct – The smart irrigation system uses an ESP8266 microcontroller as its core IoT brain to automate watering. A soil moisture sensor is inserted into the plant’s dirt to continuously monitor the current hydration levels. This analog sensor reads the volumetric water content and sends corresponding voltage signals to the ESP8266. The microcontroller processes these raw analog readings and converts them into easily understandable percentage values. Next, the ESP8266 utilizes its built-in Wi-Fi capabilities to connect to your local internet network. It then establishes a secure connection with the Adafruit IO server using the lightweight MQTT protocol. The processed moisture data is subsequently published to a specific data feed on the Adafruit cloud platform. Users can access their Adafruit IO dashboard from any device to view these real-time moisture charts. On the hardware control side, the ESP8266 is programmed with a specific minimum moisture threshold value. If the sensor detects that the soil moisture has dropped below this predefined limit, the microcontroller initiates watering. It sends a digital signal to a relay module connected to one of its output pins. The relay acts as an electrically operated switch, safely completing the circuit required by the DC water pump. The activated pump immediately draws water from a reservoir and delivers it directly to the dry soil. Once the sensor registers that the optimal moisture level has been restored, the ESP8266 signals the relay to deactivate the pump. This continuous, automated feedback loop ensures precise watering, conserves resources, and keeps plants perfectly hydrated without manual effort.

Here is the component breakdown for assembling your smart home or agriculture model:

Power & Control Electronics

5V SMPS (Switched-Mode Power Supply): This is the central power hub. A 5V (1A or 2A) SMPS will safely take wall AC power and convert it to a stable 5V DC. You will use this to power both the ESP8266 (connecting to the VIN pin on a NodeMCU) and the 5V mini water pump simultaneously.

ESP8266 Microcontroller: The brain of the operation that connects to your Wi-Fi and the Adafruit IO server.

1-Channel 5V Relay Module: Acts as the switch between the ESP8266 and the water pump, preventing the pump from drawing too much direct current from the microcontroller.

Soil Moisture Sensor & 5V Submersible Pump: The core hardware for detecting dry dirt and delivering the water.

Structural Materials

Sunboard (Foam PVC): Excellent for constructing the structural foundation. It is lightweight, easy to cut with a craft knife, and perfect for building the model house and the main base plate. It hides wiring easily if you build a false bottom.

Plastic Container: This can be smartly repurposed in a best-out-of-waste approach. It can serve as a waterproof hidden reservoir under the sunboard to hold the water for the pump, or as the main planter box to hold the real soil and the moisture sensor, ensuring water doesn’t leak onto your electronics.

Scenery & Aesthetics
Model House: Built from your sunboard offcuts, placing a house next to the irrigation setup provides excellent context, framing the project as a “Smart Home Garden.”

Artificial Grass: Can be glued directly onto the sunboard base to simulate a lawn or farm field, instantly making the model look realistic and hiding any underlying sensor wires.

Artificial Trees: Positioned around the house and the soil container to add depth and visual appeal to the landscape.
