Abstarct – The IoT-Based Star-Delta Starter is an innovative engineering solution designed to address the challenges of starting high-power industrial induction motors while integrating modern remote-access capabilities. Traditional motors draw a massive starting current, often 5 to 7 times their rated current, which can cause significant voltage drops in the power grid and mechanical stress on the motor windings. This project utilizes a Star-Delta starting mechanism to mitigate these issues by initially connecting the motor in a ‘Star’ configuration to reduce the starting voltage and current, before transitioning to a ‘Delta’ configuration for full-load operation. By incorporating the NodeMCU ESP8266 microcontroller, the system moves beyond traditional manual or semi-automatic starters into the realm of the Internet of Things (IoT). This allows operators to control and monitor the motor status from anywhere in the world via the Adafruit IO cloud platform. The integration of an I2C LCD provides real-time local feedback, while physical push buttons ensure that manual control remains available as a fail-safe. This hybrid approach—combining industrial power logic with wireless connectivity—enhances operational efficiency, reduces the need for physical presence near heavy machinery, and contributes to the longevity of the motor by ensuring a smooth, timed transition between phases. As industries move toward Automation 4.0, such smart motor controllers become essential for reducing energy waste and improving safety through digital oversight. This project serves as a scalable model for smart industrial applications, demonstrating how low-cost microcontrollers can modernize heavy electrical infrastructure.
